ELECTION ELIGIBLE VOTER REGISTRATION

An unregistered elector (or registered elector who has moved) who wishes to participate in an upcoming election now has the following options:

  1. Register in person at a Secretary of State Branch, a designated voter registration agency, the voter’s county, township clerk’s office or by mail no later than the 15th day prior to the election.
  2. Register to vote during the 14 days prior to the election, including Election Day, by applying in person at the Township Clerk’s Office.

Voters who register to vote in person during the 14-day window must show proof of residency as well as provide photo identification. A Michigan Driver License or Michigan Identification Card with the current address satisfies both the proof of residency and photo identification requirements. If the photo identification provided is a Driver License or State ID Card with a non-current address, the following documents are considered acceptable proof of residency:

  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

ABOUT YOUR PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE

There are several things to consider in making your decision regarding your principal residence:

  • Residency requirements for various colleges and universities follow rules set down by those institutions so be aware that your residence can determine how much tuition you will pay.
  • Health insurance may require that you have the same address as your parents if you are covered under their policy.
  • Your residence may also determine automobile insurance rates.
  • Because Michigan only keeps one “principal residence address” on record for your driver’s license and your voter registration, if you change one, you’ll change them both!

OBTAINING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT

Any registered elector may choose to vote by absentee ballot. Ballots are typically available 40 days before an election. You can obtain an absent voter ballot by the following methods:

  1. Click here to apply for an absentee ballot online via the Michigan Secretary of State
  2. Clicking here to download an Absent Voter Ballot Application. Once you have downloaded the Absent Voter Ballot Application, complete and sign the application, then submit it to the Fenton Township Clerk by mail, email or fax.
  3. Request an Absent Voter Ballot Application from the Fenton Township Clerk by telephone, email, mail or fax. Then, complete, sign and return the application to the Fenton Township Clerk by mail, email or fax.
  4. Complete an Absent Voter Ballot Application in person at the Fenton Township office during regular office hours. The Clerk’s Office is also open from 8:00am to 4:00pm on the Saturday immediately before each election.

Once a completed application is received, a ballot will be issued to you in person or by mail. If applying to vote absentee in person, you may also choose to vote the ballot while at the Township Office.

If you wish to be added to our Permanent Absent Voter Ballot List, send a signed written request by mail, email or fax. Once on the Permanent AV Ballot List, you will receive a ballot for every election by mail, without the need to submit an application.
