Senior Center Millage

The Genesee County Board of Commissioners approved placing the renewal on the ballot on Feb. 28. The Genesee County Senior Millage provides funds to the county’s 16 senior centers as well as other programs and services that help seniors with medical care, legal services, adult day care, elder abuse and prevention, free meals delivered at home, lawn care, transportation and more.

The millage also funds the following services for seniors:
• Adult Day Care (Michigan Community Services Inc.)
• Case Management (Valley Area Agency on Aging)

Veterans Millage

Homeless veterans can get assistance through the department to receive medical treatment, temporary shelter, housing and employment. The department has also partnered with the Mass Transportation Authority’s Rides to Wellness, a program that gives veterans free transportation to VA hospitals in Saginaw, Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Without Genesee County Veterans Services, Palmer said that local vets would have to turn to an American Legion or VFW post that might only provide part-time services or look for sources outside the county that may or may not accept out-county veterans. Supporting the millage renewal, he said, will ensure that veterans get fulltime assistance from a local source.
