Brief History
In 1993 the City of Fenton, Tyrone Township, Fenton Township, and Fenton Community Schools came together to form "Tri-County" Parks & Recreation after the need was identified to establish a consolidated summer recreation program that incorporated municipal funding, grants, local parks, school facilities and existing community education programs.
By 1999 the success of Tri-County Parks & Recreation's Summer Program provided the commission with the incentive to launch a year long series of "Town Hall Meetings" and "Strategic Study Session" to solidify plans for a year round operation.
In November of 2000 (Acting on the authority of MCL Act 312-The Metropolitan District Act-of the year 1929), the Townships of Tyrone, Fenton and Argentine, and the Cities of Linden and Fenton put to the vote of the people a perpetual millage proposal of .4 mills to operate a year-round Metropolitan Parks & Recreation District. The millage passed in the City of Fenton, Fenton Township and the City of Linden. The millage failed in Argentine Township by 67 votes and by 150 in Tyrone Township.
On December 1st of 2000 the Original Tri-County Parks & Recreation Board and Charter Commission ceased to operate and the newly formed Southern Lakes Regional Metropolitan Parks & Recreation Commission was established as a year-round Charter operation.
In May of 2001 a full time director and supporting staff were hired to, in a cooperative effort with school districts and municipalities, establish, develop and maintain recreation programming and park facilities in the SLP&R District. The Southern Lakes Regional Parks & Recreation District is said to be the first of its kind in the State Michigan.
